Abstract

Introduction : Transtheoretical model (TTM model) has been widely accepted as tailored health behavior change tool. Patients have different stages of change in weight control and text message should be tailored to each stage of change by TTM model. No studies have evaluated the effect of tailored text message service according to stage of change on weight loss. We studied development and evaluation of a tailored text message intervention according to stage of change on weight loss program for 6 months.
Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial. Men with body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) more than 25 were recruited from Korea district heating corporation, Korea expressway corporation and Korea gas corporation. Participants were randomly allocated to one of the following two groups, lasting 24 weeks : (1) intervention group that included tailored text messages given every other day and four education sessions about weight control during 6 months ; (2) control group that received four education sessions about weight control during 6 months. The primary outcome was the difference of weight loss at 6 months of intervention. A mixed model repeated measures analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of the intervention group compared with control group.
Results : A total of 138 obese men were randomized into intervention group or control group. At the end of 6 months, the intervention group (n=72 ) lost 1.60 kg (SD 3.36) and control group(n=66) lost 1.42kg (SD 3.55), not significant differences between two groups. In both groups, stage of change in weight loss was comtemplation or preparation stage. At the end of study, 45% of intervention group ranked this message program helpful to weight control, 52% would recommend the text message services to his friends. Conclusions : Tailored text messages by TTM model did not take significant effects on weight loss in middle aged obese men. More various tools such as mobile phone, internet or smart phone with various methods such as recommended recipies, social network service, keeping weight diary should be studied and validated in weight loss program.
