Abstract


Background:

The importance of delivering health information solutions supporting effective and efficient quality healthcare treatment is a priority today. One key need is the access and availability of critical information and data for clinicians to make effective decisions. Towards this aim, providing appropriate doctor portals in healthcare contexts becomes important.

Objective:

This research serves to investigate critical issues regarding providing portals to doctors in a private healthcare context so that they can easily access relevant data and information when and as required.

Methodology:

A standard qualitative case study approach was adopted. The research surveyed two groups of participants 1) visiting medical officers and 2) IT/Management staff. The on-line survey was was used to determine what capabilities the doctor portal should
have and how the doctor portal might be used.

Results:

Key findings that emerged from the thematic analysis performed from the research included that a doctor portal should provide easy to use, reliable and convenient access to radiology, medical imaging and laboratory results as well as equal support to both traditional computers and mobile devices. In addition, important design criteria to ensure success in a private healthcare context were also noted.

Conclusions:

Doctor portals address a key void. Future research will examine best practices regarding the order in which doctor portal functionality is delivered, how to best present clinical information on mobile devices, design patterns for extracting clinical information from raw clinical results and metadata, and how to structure project governance to achieve successful delivery of doctor portals.
