Abstract
The Dr. Leo Kannerhuis has developed a vision on disease management for people with ASD: the life course model. This vision and the fact that a lot of people with ASD need lifelong coaching, we started developing a digital coach on a mobile device, such as an Ipod or Iphone. Using the coach should enhance empowerment, lead to improvement of the quality of life and a reduce the need for lifelong personal support.
The project digital coach started with the development of the software and content. In the first phase of development we focused on travelling by public transport, since it is severely limiting if you can not travel independently. The content contains support for problem solving and planning support for public transport. The content was developed in cooperation with adolescents and professionals. The developmental phase was followed by a small pilot with an evaluation of the coach. The main question was: What is the effect of using digital coaching on the travelling routine of an adolescent with ASD. Data were collected from an experimental group and a small control group. Determining the baseline in skills and short user training were part of the trial.
Subquestions for the evaluation were:
• Does using the coach lead to an improvement of their travelling behaviour?
• Does it improve the quality of life as experienced by the adolescent and/or the parents?
• Is it cost effective?
• Are the adolescents satisfied with the digital coach?
The outcomes of the first pilot were positive. There was an increase in self-esteem and a good match between the application an target group. By that time publicity had generated a huge interest in the iPod coach for many daily operations both for people with ASD, but also for people with other disorders. Why not use the coach for other life areas? A next phase of development lead us where we are now: we have two standardized coaches, for public transport and schoolsupport. And we have a tailor-made coach. This coach is a personal coach, made by parents or professionals, to support youngsters of adults who have difficulties in structuring their day, keeping an overview and finishing al kind of daily life task. For instance: getting washed and dressed properly in the morning, or being on time for an appointment, or packing your bag. The digital coach is your personal guide, that can support you any hour of the day that you need support, in any way you like it, or need it. It a coach that really matters, really improves participation in society, even when you are mentallly of cognitively impaired.
The presentation will focus on presenting the coaches and their value for the user.
