Abstract
Many eHealth innovations fail to be successful in practice. Reasons most mentioned are the lack of a suitable infrastructure, technology that does not meet the user demands, and problems regarding sustainability. Business modelling seems a promising way to improve eHealth implementations since it identifies a priori the assets for success of an eHealth innovation from a multi-stakeholder and value-creating perspective. In this paper we therefore suggest that business modelling should be used as an effective approach for the design, implementation and evaluation of eHealth innovations. We will elaborate on the principles of business modelling and on the barriers and opportunities that lay ahead when applying business modelling in the eHealth context. We subsequently discuss why business modelling may be helpful for eHealth innovations: Business modelling is a holistic approach to guide development and implementation of eHealth innovations. Also, it allows the whole development process to be iterative and reflective. Business modelling renders the overall value-creation a co-creative and collaborative effort among all relevant stakeholders. The focus on value-creation implies that these eHealth innovations are less technology-driven and instead emphasizes what added-value these eHealth innovations should really offer. We conclude with introducing our eHealth Business Modelling Roadmap, a work-in-progress comprehensive set of multidisciplinary instruments that contribute to the development and implementation of eHealth innovations that is grounded on a business modelling perspective.
